How to Clean Your Jewelry Pieces

Cleaning your jewelry can be a difficult task, especially if you do not know what you are doing. Though professional cleaning services are usually recommended (and often offered for free by many jewelers), there are ways you can clean your jewelry to keep it sparkling in between those professional cleanings.

When cleaning diamonds, use a soft-bristled brush that is non-metallic and a solution made up of mild ammonia and water. Use the brush to gently scrub away any build-up that has formed on your jewel. Avoid touching your diamond after you have cleaned it because the oil from your hands can actually dull it.

When cleaning any form of birthstone jewelry or gemstones, it is a lot easier than many other pieces. With a bowl of warm and soapy water, soak your gemstone pieces for a few minutes. Remove them and then use a non-metallic and soft brush to gently remove any grime that has formed over the pieces. Never use harsh chemicals or a rough brush that can scratch the surface of these precious stones. If you notice that your jewel is dull after cleaning, bring it to your Nikola Valenti jeweler to have it re-oiled.

Pearls are very easy to damage, especially when cleaning yourself. Pearls can also be easily dulled out during the cleaning process; therefore it is usually recommended that any pearl jewelry be cleaned by a professional like your local Kay’s Jewelry rather than trying to clean them yourself.

Most metals are very durable and difficult to damage with self-cleaning. Use a little bit of rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth or brush to dissolve the grime. If your piece of jewelry is a solid metal such as a pair of gold stud earrings, then you can simply soak them in a small solution of rubbing alcohol for a few minutes. Remember to never soak any metals that have pearls or other precious birthstone jewelry attached to them.

The Use of Ultrasonic Cleaners
You have most likely seen them in the jewelry store or even your general store – the ultrasonic cleaner. These clean jewelry by using sound waves that gently vibrate the grime from the piece. Though it shakes off dirt and grime, it can also severely damage your piece of jewelry.

Birthstone jewelry and soft gems such as pearls should never be placed in an ultrasonic cleaner.
